Patent Drawings
“Art is not a thing,
It is a way to Success.”
~Elbert Hubbad
The quote mentioned above can be justified for patent drawings as well. Since, patent drawings is an art which requires indispensable efforts to achieve the success, as desired with the patent grant. Multiple views of pictures support inventions. Be it plain, elevation, section, or perspective every aspect presents patent drawings in a more descriptive manner. In case of requirement, refer detailed view of a few elements. Attach and place the patent illustrations of the application at one place on the sheet without wasting any space. Moreover, it would help if you put the sheet views in an upright position with enough gaps among them. Avoid putting on the sheets having abstract, claims, or specifications.
In this blog, we are catering indispensable rules for patent drawings views. If you want to know the basics of patent drawings rules, refer Patent Drawings Rules: Part I
Note: Lines of projection must not be the criteria for connecting views. One can use dash lines to connect a waveform electrical signal to show the relative timings of the waveforms.
Patent Drawings View Types
When this view is shown in a figure present on the same sheet as another figure, then this view must be present within brackets. Phantom lines represent sectional views. These lines are thin and are chosen from the material of the object. Moreover, the drawing of separate lines is majorly at the angle of 45 degrees.
Type | Description |
Exploded View | Exploded views include various parts but are enclosed within a bracket to display the relationship or assembly order of different permissible parts. |
Partial View |
You can use this view to presenting large machine or device. In that case, offering the whole picture is not possible, so the partial view helps in offering the picture on several sheets. Do edge to edge linking of sheets in this view to avoid mingling of one partial view with another partial view. Moreover, you can choose a smaller scale view to show the whole partial pictures indicating the positions of parts. In case, when a part of the picture is magnified, then the magnified view and the view each should be labeled as separate views. Where views on two or more sheets form, in effect, a single complete perspective on the various layers must be proper such that entire figure gets together without hiding any part of any views present on the different layers. On a single sheet, a very long view gets divided into different parts present on one another. However, the relation between different parts ought to be clear and not to be open for more than one interpretation. |
Sectional View | Sectional view highlights the interior construction of an object, or it is used to show hidden components of a device. |
Patent Drawings View Arrangements
In the outline of another view, placing of one view must not be upon another. All the views present on the same sheet must stand in the direction and case if possible stand to help in reading with the sheet held in the upright position.
Make your patent drawings dimensions accurate by reading: what patent drawing experts say about dimensions?
In case, the sheet width is less perpendicular than the views then it is necessary for the invention’s clearest illustration, to turn the sheet on its side so that the upper part of the layer with exact top margins gets in use as the space of the heading available on the right-hand side. Also, words should be present in a horizontal, left to right fashion wherein page is current either perpendicular or turn to help the top becomes the right side except the graphs utilizing standard scientific convention to represent the axis of abscissas (of X) and the axis of ordinates (of Y).
