Under the updated EPO colour patent drawing guidelines, applicants may file colour patent drawings for European patent applications from 1 October 2025, provided the application is filed electronically. From this date, the European Patent Office will accept both greyscale and colour drawings, if they comply with the applicable EPO technical standards.
Using patent drawings in colour is optional. Applicants may continue filing black-and-white drawings, choose greyscale or colour, or even combine different formats within the same European patent application. Many applicants, particularly those seeking protection outside Europe, may still prefer black-and-white drawings, as not all jurisdictions follow the EPO colour drawings rules.
No. The option to file colour drawings for European patents applies only to electronically filed applications. If an application is submitted on paper, the traditional EPO requirement for black-and-white line drawings remains in force, and colour drawings will not be accepted.
Yes. One of the key changes in the EPO colour patent drawings rules is that drawings filed electronically in greyscale or colour will be published exactly as filed. They will appear in public files in colour and will no longer be automatically converted into black and white during publication.
No. The revised rules apply only to European patent applications. Under the PCT system, patent drawings in colour are still not admissible for international publication, and any submitted colour drawings will be converted into black and white. However, the original colour versions may be accessible for reference through WIPO’s PATENTSCOPE database.
For Euro-PCT applications entering the European phase on or after 1 October 2025, the EPO will process colour patent drawings only if the international publication confirms that colour drawings are available on PATENTSCOPE. If this condition is not met, the EPO will rely on the black-and-white version of the drawings.
In most cases, no. Black-and-white drawings cannot be replaced with colour patent drawings after filing. Any corrected or replacement drawings must correspond to the originally filed content. Colour drawings may only be accepted if the application was originally filed in colour.

Yes. Amended drawings filed electronically after 1 October 2025 may be submitted as colour or greyscale patent drawings. However, they must not introduce new subject matter and must fully comply with all EPO colour drawing format and quality requirements.
Yes. Translations and divisional applications must reproduce drawings in exactly the same format as the original filing. If the parent European patent application included colour patent drawings, those drawings must remain in colour in all translated or divisional versions
No. Although the EPO colour drawings requirement allows drawings in colour, the invention must not depend on colour features. References such as “the blue layer” or “the red component” in the claims, description, or abstract are discouraged and may be disregarded during examination. Technical features should always be defined independently of colour.
